Im extremely bothered by a couple things in the 48 hours episode. First, though, i want to say that im amazed someone FINALLY brought up the fact that her red miata was still in the namw of John Lessard. It never mentioned that in the book and botheres me that her family or anyone else k ew how she could afford the car. Back in 2012 i posted on this site that the car was given to her by John Lessard and they dated. I worked at Fox River back then and everyone knew he gave her that car and they were seeing each other. That brings me to why did he tell 48 hours that he only met Jodi once when he handed over the keys to the car?! I dont think Lessard had anything to do with her disappearance but im baffled at why he would deny knowing her. Which brings me to another thing that struck me. Hohn Vancises lady friend stated John V told her that the car was a bday gift feom a boyfriend but she was going to give it back. This sounds totally truw to me. But why would her friend Ani say she didnt believe that at all. Didnt any of her friends wonder how she could afford that car? My theory is that it WAS a gift. That she was i deed seeing Lessard. He was very rich and very handsome. Jodi made hardly any money. She most likely didnt want her friends or family to know she would accept such an expensive gift from a man. Maybe she thought they would frown on that. I think John V was jealous John L because they were the same age yet jodi thought of JV as a father but really luke JL as much more. He prob questioned Jodi about the car and she said she was going to give it back to JL to appease JV. Maybe she even tild him she wasnt seeing him anymore. And maybe just maybe JL was at her apartment that night and JV was spying in her and after jodi got woke up for work, JL left first and then when jodi came out, JV confronted her. Couldnit be that she was supposed to come over to watch that video with him the night before but instead had a male friend over after the golf outing and stood vancise up so he sat outside her apartment waiting to see WHO she stood him up for? I think investigators have not followed up and through with certain things and just taken peoples words at face value. Why wouldnt they check with more people about the relationship between lessard and jodi. They just assume her best frienda or family would have known. Why not ask peoplenin the town and community where Lessard lives? There ARE people who saw Lessard and Jodi togwther. This was taljed about WAY before she ever disappeared. Again, i dont think lessard had anything to do with her disappearing. But i totally believe he  and his res miata has so much to do with why. As for him kying about only meeting her once. I can only soeculate that he lied because he is a very orivate person. This town he luves in and owns a business is VERY small. 30 miles from Mason city, osage has a pipulation of around 4000. Everyone knows everyone. Im sure he did not want his name involved in such a high profile case. And he managed to have his name not mentioned once for 23 years until tonight in 48 hours! Ive always wondered how on earth he managed that! And even though 48 hours finally vrought it up, they still didnt get it quite right. But i guess its a start. Still, i cant help to feel frustration.

I remember discussion of this on here some years back. It would seem to be, in any case, more motive for JV.

But JL lying to the police and media is not good and would be calling his character into question. If anyone that rich and powerful wanted her gone, for whatever unknown reasons, he could get it done, with little or no trail back to himself. Im sure he has friends in powerful positions also. It makes 23 years with little info and leads alot less unbelievable

M.C.P.D. (leadership) was incompetent and as we all know a group is only as good as its leaders.  If Lessard, who Jodi *did* date (although I don't know for exactly how long), lied to them about being there the night before she disappeared and had a reasonably good alibi, they probably just did a cursory check on it, or none at all after he told them he had only met her when he gave her the keys.

I do have to say that I find it extremely hard to believe her friends at the station were unaware of their relationship.

I xan totally see why she wouldnt mention Lessard to friends family or coworkers. She received an expensive car as a gift for her bday from a rich older gentlemen ... in a small midwest town like Mason city, that is NOT something you share with peoole and risk getting bnb out or gossiped about especially when you are in the public eye. And especially if you arent dating the guy seriously and just casually. He was datimg other women- not just her. Not a single persin from Osage where Lessard lives and owns a business has ever been questioned! And ill bet the cops just took his word about everything. I do not think he did anything tobher though. I just highly suspect he, or the car he gave her two weeks beforw she disappeared is WhY. Lessard is very quiet and private. Sure, anyine could be a killer but i just dont see him as being the jealous type at all. Let alone doing manual labor like it would take to haul a body away and hide it. And i cant imagine him hanging out or being friends  with the type of person who would help him or do the dirty work for him. Butbi do think if they follow the the car and keep pressing for the truth it will lead to the why and the who.

Im pretty sure i recall reading that none of vansices vehicles nor his boat were ever searched. And his house was not searches until years later afyer he had already moved. Im also curious about the beer cans and everything else! DNA testimg was available in 1995. Im sure it took a LONG time but STILL! Im guessing that cops just didnt collect any OR if they did, they were too inexperienced with it and ruined it or lost it somehow over time. Does anyone recall if the police has ever said if thwy collected dna or not? Or even attempted too? It seems to me most of the investigation into this case has been done by the creators of this website and other people who have nothing to do with law enforcement. I wish another agency would come in and take it over.

here's a more pointed question re: the car......what became of it?  More specifically:  if the police did in fact return the car to Jodi's sister / to her family after a few months (as was alluded to in the 48 Hours episode 12/15/18) then what did the family do with it?  There are only a couple of options here, now that we know the car was titled to Lessard:

  1. The family would need to return it to Lessard as it is *his* car.  They can't sell it or keep it - it's still his.  if this were there case I'd expect her sister would be fully aware of this and would not have raised questions about how Jodi might have funded the purchase of the car, as she has been quoted as doing in the past, where she once posited that her mother may have helped Jodi with the down payment.  If in fact the car were never titled in Jodi's name and the family had to return the car to Lessard, why would her sister have ever commented on how Jodi might have found the money for such a purchase?
  2. Lessard could have transferred the title to someone in Jodi's family AFTER it was returned, and they would then be able to keep the car or sell it as they see fit.  He would not, however, be able to transfer the car into Jodi's name at that point.  Why he would opt to do this would be anyone's guess.

In the case of scenario 1, it opens up the possibility that Lessard still has the car.  An outside chance, but a chance nonetheless.  If that is the case it opens up a bunch more questions.  Does anyone have the VIN on that car?  running a simple carfax would be really insightful here, to see the chain of ownership over the years.

I was very surprised when watching the 48 hours footage how many people were using Jody’s name in the past tense within a couple hours or days of her disappearance. A couple said something along the lines of “She was a good friend.” If a friend of mine goes missing, I’m going to still be talking about her in the present tense - at least for the first few hours, days, months, maybe even years! It may be worthwhile to review footage of people who continuously used the past tense rather than the present at the beginning of the investigation.
