Has anybody seen this article?
It's interesting that Jodi mentions she met a man on a cruise. Wonder who that was.
Granted, these are a reporter's chosen statements from the journal and not the entire thing; but do the journal entries sound odd to anyone else?
Usually people journal because they are trying to express things they cannot express to other people. Journal entries often have very secretive thoughts and very personal feelings in them; often quite negative.
Jodi's journal entries seem like she's writing for someone else to see it. They are like reading a positive thought book or something ( i.e. life is good, my family is wonderful etc.)

She also mentions an interest in Arizona. Isn't that where VanSice went? Maybe she really did like this guy.

Great article. I remember seeing this last year, but don't think we added it to the archive. Thanks for posting it. I've added it to the front page and the 2008 archive.

The Globe Gazette received Jodi's journal from Mason City's former police chief's wife. They posted excerpts on their website. Bob Link's article lists some actual entries from the journal.

It's a very good look at who Jodi truly was as a person.

For instance, here is a quote from the article:

The May 31, 1994, entry states: "I'm recovering from Memorial Day Weekend, unbelievable -- Indy 500 -- a time of my life. Partied with so many wonderful people -- Mario Andretti (world class racer), Joe Dumars (Detroit Pistons basketball player) and Tim Allen (TV star from 'Home Improvement'). Had an incredible weekend."

I'm putting myself in her place, writing a journal about my feelings. I would not need to remind "myself" about who Mario Andretti was. I would not need to remind "myself" about who Tim Allen was if I was the only one who would ever read my own diary.
Being stalked is a terrible and frightful thing. She obviously felt so because she called the police and I think it was said somewhere she was very frightened shortly before she disappeared. My journal entries would be FULL of how scared I was, what the vehicles looked like, what time it happened, who I met who gave me the creeps etc.
If I was fed up at work, as she said, I would be naming names of who ticked me off at work.
If I was falling in love with John VanSice, I would definitely be mentioning it in my diary.

These are just my thoughts, as well as from listening to other people who "journaled" for stress reasons. The journal becomes your best friend and is a wonderful therapy.

Granted, we haven't seen the entire journal, so maybe other parts of it state her true feelings.

Excellent observations Columbo. I also thought of VanSice ending up in AZ as well. I also agree with you about thinking she would talk more about her fears and concerns, the negative feelings about career and lack of progress.

It also mentioned she started the journal because of a Tony Robbins tape on being positive. But it's what she isn't talking about, serious fears of her life that makes you wonder.

Maybe there is another journal, expressing more concerns and her fears, naming names. How does a person who starts keeping journals not mention "I called the police today, I'm fearful of my safety". Why sanitize the journal unless she is doing it only for positive reinforcement. But fears and concerns? I don't know, there could very well be another journal expressing those things we would expect to see.

You can be sure that the published segements of Jodi's journal are those we are 'allowed' to see.

Also I note that Jodi made few entries in the last two weeks of her life:

There is a twelve day gap from the 13th through to the 25th. Was there nothing worth writing about?

I hope John Vancise was questioned in some depth. And more than once.

Aside from the possibility it was a stalker, usually woman are attacked or killed for sexual reasons, personal jealousy, maybe a romantic rival who could have paid someone to do this to Jodie. But if that is so, why use someone she knew (the mysterious name she called out)? Is the answer that makes sense a stalker?

A lot of this is guess work which could be resolved with a little more releasing of information by those in authority who have this as an active case.

How many people here would not try to get details of a car that is following you anything that may help the police track the car down.

Good discussion about Jodi's diary and the material it contained. I was curious as to who the person was that made the decision to publish which entries and safeguard others. Was it a joint screening and selection process between the newspaper and Law Enforcement? Perhaps the entries that were safeguarded held information pertinent to the case and the others that were released had; well "no value evidence wise?" Like someone said there are dates in the middle of the entries that have been deleted, I wonder why.

I have spoken to at least four people who have confirmed that Jodi had communicated to them that she was concerned about her safety. She described the vehicle and yet it doesn't sound as though any effort was made to extend security if it was happening on a regular schedule.

Keep the comments regarding the journal coming in and maybe there were other copies made and a little bird would drop them in the tip section!!

On another subject; does anyone know where Jodi went to get her hair done?

Gary, I would think her friend from episode 10 should know the answer to that question about her hairdresser

I've often wondered what the ex-police official's wife hoped to accomplish by sending the journal entries to the Gazette. Was she trying to reignite interest in a cold case, or do you think she had a different idea in mind?

Greg;

This may be out there, but maybe she thought someone was being protected and the police just weren't looking hard enough.

Not for nothing, Lord knows, this was far from the perfect crime, just look at what was left behind. It rained the day before and morning of the abduction, if you follow her drag marks wouldn't it lead to a set of tire marks that would have possibly still be visible, and from that determine what type of vehicle they fit?. I'm not talking about a white van just because it was seen.

We need the police to open up a little on the contents of the file and after all these years recognize that either they are working on the case or they could use some help. We are full of ideas leads us down the proper path and I bet we can come up with something that was overlooked. We aren't asking for everything being released just the things that are known and have serious questions attached to them.

I've also wondered about the tire marks. Her belongings and I believe they said some "drag marks" should have led to something. I'm betting the abduction vehicle was VERY close by since the woman who heard the screams heard everything in seemingly fast succession:

I don't think she knew at the time that John was going to AZ. He did not make  this decision until after Jodi was gone. He only went there for the drugs .
