My Theory
December 26, 2018

This is my personal theory. I think Jodi had a male guest the night before her abduction. For whatever reason, discretion was required. Maybe this was a new relationship she wasn’t ready to tell people about because she didn’t know if it had a future, or maybe she already knew it didn’t; she was by all I’ve read focused on her career at that point in her life, so maybe this wasn’t meant to be serious or lasting. Maybe it was a more casual encounter, though I am not suggesting Jodi was a promiscuous person, from what I’ve read she wasn’t. Or perhaps the man was married? Bottom line, she wanted to keep this part of her life private.

I don’t believe she visited JV’s apartment to watch the birthday party video. I think she either stopped by on her way home or called him and made an excuse, like she was too tired after the golf tournament or had a headache, if they indeed really had plans to meet, or maybe they didn’t have plans, since the video story comes solely from him. As I said in an earlier post, Jodi, JV, and her female friends picked up the birthday video on Sunday afternoon and supposedly watched it then since it was a rainy day and they couldn’t go out on the boat waterskiiing again as they had Saturday. (page 66 Dead Air) If that is true, it just seems like this tape is getting an excessive amount of viewing.

JV was either concerned about her, if she made an excuse and blew him off or stood him up without explanation, or, even if they didn’t have any plans to meet, was just curious what she was doing and stopped by her apartment. He would have known her car and seen it in the parking lot. I think he was the man banging on her door shouting “Jodi, I know you’re in there.”

She was there, but she wasn’t alone. She and her companion ignored him and waited quietly for him to go away.

JV was known to have a hair-trigger temper, I’ve been re-reading Beth Bednar’s book “Dead Air” and she says Jodi told friends this made her uncomfortable, she even confided in one person she wanted to end the friendship but was worried how he might react. (page 126 Dead Air).

I think JV stewed and obsessed all that night about Jodi and how much he wanted her and all he had done for her and was waiting for her early the next morning. He knew her habits and her car so he knew she hadn’t left yet. I don’t know Jodi’s habit regarding calling in sick, but if this was something she rarely or never did, he may have known that too and that it was just a matter of time before she came out. If it's true she had a habit of being late for work, maybe he knew that too and that her guard might be down as she was rushing to get to work. I think a confrontation did happen between them in the parking lot as Jodi was hurrying to her car and even though Jodi was a person who hated confrontations I think she had finally had it and told him off and to just back off and cool it and that she wasn't interested in being his girlfriend or in continuing their friendship anymore and his temper got the better of him and he attacked her. Maybe he didn’t mean to kill her, or maybe he did, or maybe she was just unconscious, maybe she lived for a little while afterwards but he obviously couldn't let her go on living, whatever the case he had to act fast and cover up. Whatever he did, he just got really lucky.

I think her overnight guest is the reason for the raised toilet seat, the made bed, and the different brand of beer cans. I think he slept through Jodi’s abduction, maybe he got spooked when the phone kept ringing with follow-up phone calls to her apartment and left then, or maybe he left shortly after she did and only found out about it later in the day. Or maybe he did see something, possibly her possessions strewn in the parking lot and realize something was very wrong. But he did not come forward because for whatever reason he did not want to become involved.

This is just my personal theory based on what I’ve heard and read.

Lee you may be onto something.  Was reading that the Miata was possibly a gift from another man she may have been dating, but kept quiet for whatever reasons only Jodi and that man would know.  I too read that Jodi didn't like confrontation and did whatever she could to avoid it.  I wonder if she told JV that she was going to return the Miata to the other man just to placate JV?  Avoid a jealous or angry confrontation?

I also read that they viewed the birthday video tape the Sunday after this weekend water skiing trip because of rain.  Why would she need to watch it again so soon?  Kind of makes you wonder if the story that Jodi was over the night before her disappearance was made up for another reason.  Maybe because her DNA or some belongings of hers might be found at someone's home and he needed a cover story should the police come to search it.  Jodi had reportedly called a friend out of state and spoke to the friend's husband which contradicts the time frame that JV gave for Jodi being at his home to re-watch the birthday tape.
