Good question. I'm guessing, from being on other similar forums, that if LE let Josh and Gary see the records or make copies, Josh and Gary would have posted the info on this forum. If not, I'm not sure why they would have this forum. Maybe they can answer that for us. Gary...Josh? Ya there?

All three investigators are reporters. Sometimes reporters get information that's off the record. It could be that Gary, Josh and Caroline (Carolyn?) know a lot more about the case than they can ethically share in a public forum. If they are being fed information, I feel certain that they share as much as they can because they seem invested in and respectful of this forum. It's probably a balancing act for them.

Ann;
Awhile back Gary of Josh posted their frustration that another member of the press I believe was able to look at the file but their requests for the same courtesy was refused. They indicated they had tried several times with the same result. Please don't ask for a location I believe it was a response to a comment and there have been quite a few since then.
If that has changed I haven't seen it. If they were given the opportunity I still consider it a plus because I respect Gary and Josh's approach to this case and their continued efforts to bring Jodie some justice and her family conclusion as to what happened.
If I'm correct I hope Josh or Gary can respond and clarify the current position.

Didn't Gary and Josh a while back ask for donations so they could scan some of the records? I thought I read that somewhere. I remember thinking how great that would be, to post them on the forum. But I never heard about it again.
My experience with small communities like Mason City is that they are much more guarded and secretive when it comes to transparency and allowing the public/media to review public records. They don't seem to understand they are "public records." Big cities are much more likely to open up records to the public or media. This may be the case with Josh and Gary. They are probably trying to work with LE initially to prove they can be trusted to keep some of the information confidential, and hopefully get copies of some or most of the records. If they still are not successful, then they should come out with guns blazing and go to court to get the police department to let them see the records.

Gary and Josh did exactly what was asked and clarified here:

Well stated.

9 years ago a investigation the MCPD jacked up that set a guilty man free? Whow was this? This kind of false statements is why this case has never been solved. GROW UP and stop rambling nonsence to get your jollies.

Wow -- Read some of the older quotes on this thread re the 9 year old murder.

I have been saying that for a while now, Baffled. The authorities are no closer today than when Jodi disappeared in resolving this case. They should make some of the case files available to the public in hopes they will jog someone's memory that would lead to a viable suspect. Welcome to the board.
:laugh: Bwaaahahahahahahaha. Sorry, Closure. I know that's the official position and I'm not laughing at you, just the officials. There has been NO progress on this case, and like Baffled noted, it would be nice to get a cold case squad together to go over the records with "fresh eyes." LE screwed up this case from the start, in my opinion. Why don't they release some of the records? It's been 16 years, for crying out loud. Let the public review some of the records. It certainly can't hurt. If records pertaining to Jodi's disappearance are being withheld from the public because they may "compromise key evidence," then shame on LE for sitting on "key evidence" all this time and not making any headway. One would have to assume LE HAS key evidence, which I doubt. Sorry, but I don't subscribe to keeping such info from the public because it could hurt the case. Many cold cases are solved because LE gets the public involved. That should happen in Jodi's case![/quote]
How do we know there is NO progress towards the case? It would HURT an investigation to give weekly investigation updates to the public! And what would such reports contain , for example, "Investigators this week have suspect x under surveillance and plan to surveil suspect y the week of January 9th". There are multiple reasons why investigators do not release records, etc. for public review. 1. It can COMPROMISE an investigation, giving the real perpetrator a "heads up" about where the investigation stands. 2. There are serious legal issues if the police release information that person x was investgated and cleared. For example person x would likely not like this information being known to the community and his employer and may SUE law enforcement.
Again, there have likely been mistakes made in this investigation, but I for one want to believe that law enforcement wants nothing more than to solve this case. Thinking otherwise leads down the path of conspiracy theories that are not going to bring Jodi's killer to justice.

I don't think anyone wants weekly updates on the investigation. And I don't think anyone wants any information regarding surveillance or information that truly should remain confidential. There are tons of public records in this case, and LE is not releasing any of them! Regarding "person x" suing LE because that person does not want information released to the community, that's one of the prices we pay for living in a free society. It is a public record!Whether or not "person x" wants his or her name out in the public realm, it's already public because it's in a public record. If we followed your reasoning, Nixon would never have had to release the Watergate tapes to prove he had conspired to coverup the Watergate break-in. Nixon had refused to release the tapes, claiming they were "vital to national security." Court thought otherwise.

I am going to read the book.I have not heard of it.My family and I had been in Iowa for three years when Jodi disappeared in Mason City.We are from Huxley and we still wonder and discuss Jodi.I taped the WE show about her case.My husband and I watched the show again a couple of months ago.We have always believed that it was a co-worker or a stalker/fan type.We discuss the Tammy J.Zwicky,Jodi and the paper boy Johnny Gosh that disappeared in Des Moines.We always hope and pray that Jodi and Johnny Gosh will be found and be found alive.Unfortunately Tammy Zwicky was found dead by the interstate in Missouri.Hopefully some information that someone has will solve the case of Jodi or she will be found hopefully alive.Jodi is a beautiful lady and she seemed to be a very nice woman.
